Senior Community In New Jersey Throws ‘Sinkhole Party’ Amid I-80 Chaos
"The soirée may have poked fun at the chaos, but it also served as a reminder of the resilience and humor that thrive in our community."
LIVINGSTON, NJ — “When life gives you sinkholes, throw a party.” That was the philosophy behind a soiree with an unusual theme in Livingston, its organizers say.
For months, drivers passing through New Jersey have been encountering traffic delays and detours on I-80. The traffic woes are a result of several sinkholes that formed after an abandoned mineshaft collapsed in December 2024. Since then, motorists have been dealing with delays and detours while the NJDOT has been working 24 hours a day to repair the sinkholes.

Brandywine Livingston by Monarch – a senior community on East Mount Pleasant Avenue – recently put a humorous spin on the unexpected local phenomenon with its tongue-in-cheek “Sinkhole Soirée,” a lighthearted event inspired by Route 80’s latest (and least convenient) attraction.

Residents, families and team members joined in on the fun, donning their best “construction chic” for a day of laughter and levity. Guests played Traffic Cone Ring Toss (with winners proudly strutting in their new reflective vests), sipped on signature construction cocktails like the “Sink Hole Screwdriver” and the “Detour Daiquiri,” and showed off their safety savvy with OSHA quizzes.
“The soirée may have poked fun at the chaos, but it also served as a reminder of the resilience and humor that thrive in our community, no matter what’s happening just down the highway,” spokespeople said.
