Thieves Break Into Livingston Home, Take Car Keys, Take BMW: Cops

The trend of car key thefts in Essex County continued with an incident in Livingston on Sunday.

LIVINGSTON, NJ — Two home break-ins were reported to the Livingston police on Sunday, one of which resulted in the theft of a BMW, police said.

Police said that a BMW may have been the target in the second break-in, as well.

On Jan. 14 at 5:54 a.m., police said, officers responded to a Penwood Road residence on a report of a burglary. They were met by the homeowner, who said that the suspects got into his home through a garage window and stole the keys for a BMW X7, then subsequently stole the car.

The thieves left a Hyundai Sonata that they had arrived in, police said.

The X7 was recovered a short time later in Irvington. The Livingston Detective Bureau is investigating.

Later, at 3:13 p.m., Livingston police responded to an Arbor Court home on a report of an attempted burglary in the early morning hours.

The homeowner told police that he'd heard a bang and found a damaged window where someone tried to get in.

It is believed the homeowner's BMW was the target, police said. The Livingston Detective Bureau is investigating.
