
Daylight savings may have been a couple of weeks ago, but it's still not too late for a friendly reminder to check and change the batteries of fire and carbon monoxide alarms, if the call log for Livingston's Fire Department is any indication. The FD has answered numerous calls relating to alarms sounding.
For the week of March 24-29, below are the calls for the department:
- Wednesday, March 24 — Responded to two calls including one from a resident on Longview Drive when the fire alarm activated as result of construction; system was reset prior to FD arrival. Also, FD responded to call on South Orange Avenue reporting a brush burning. Upon arrival, FD found homeowner had lit a fire to remove brush. Fire was extinguished and homeowner advised of open burning ordinance.
- Thursday, March 24 — FD fielded 4 calls, one at Longacre Drive with a report of a burning odor in residence. FD checked meter and found a slight problem with a light bulb. A call from a resident on Broadlawn Drive also reported an odor of gas on in roadway. FD found a reading of 5 percent coming from catch basin. PSE&G was notified. A resident on Swan Road reported a fire alarm going off as homeowner was trying to change its batteries. The system was reset. The FD also responded to a call from East Cedar Street of owner burning brush; FD found about 10 logs and wood burning in a large metal pot. Fire was extinguished with a garden hose due to embers falling near wooded area. Entire area was wet down.
- Friday, March 26 — Two calls reported. There was a false CO alarm reported on Pittsfield Court; PSE&G notified as a precaution. The was a grease fire on a stovetop in a residence on So. Livingston Ave; fire was extinguished before FD arrived.
- Saturday, March 27 — Two calls reported. A fire alarm activated at residence on East Drive due to smoke from self cleaning oven. System was reset and home was vented. A homeowner on Hillside Terrace reported a gas odor in residence. Leak was found with stove; residence was vented and gas was shut off to unit.
- Sunday, March 28 — Four calls reported. A resident on Virginia Avenue reported that a CO detector activated. No reading was found, but homeowner was advised to have unit replaced. A homeowner on South Ashby Avenue reported fire alarm activated as a result of smoke from cooking. False fire alarm from a homeowner on Notchhill Road. Also, a resident on Downing Drive reported a CO alarm activated, but no reading was found by FD; advised homeowner to replace unit.
- Monday, March 29 — FD responded to two calls. A resident on Binghampton Lane reported a fire alarm falsely activated. Also, a homeowner on Rosedale Terrace reported a CO alarm activated; no reading was found.
