Woman Arraigned for Embezzling from Former Maplewood Charity Now Based in Livingston

Shaakerah Kelly deposited $320,000 in donations to Cerebral Palsy of North Jersey into her own bank account over a three-year period. She was arrested last March.

Today, a Bloomfield woman was arraigned in Newark for stealing funds from a charity now based in Livingston but formerly located in Maplewood.

Shaakerah Kelly, 35, of Bloomfield, was arraigned today in Superior Court in Newark. Kelly was charged with depositing $320,000 in donation checks to Cerebral Palsy of North Jersey into her own bank account. Cerebral Palsy was formerly located in Maplewood but since the time of the crime (2005-2008) has relocated to Livingston.

According to Paul Loriquet, a spokesman for Essex County Prosecutor Paula Dow, Kelly worked in the accounts payable department for Cerebral Palsy of North Jersey. She also ran up thousands of dollars in charges on her corporate credit card.

Bail for Kelly was set at $75,000.

The alleged theft took place from January 2005 through January 2008.

Loriquet said that the Essex County Prosecutor's office economic crimes unit and the Maplewood police handled the investigation.  Way to go, Maplewood PD!
