Young Golfer Loses at Junior Nationals

Karen Chung was eliminated in quarterfinal play at Olympia Fields.

Karen Chung, the 16-year-old golfer from Livingston competing on a national level this week, was eliminated from the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship on Friday after making it into the Sweet 16.

The Livingston athlete faced a tough competitor in the quarterfinals, Yu Liu of China, who won the match 6 and 5 at outside of Chicago.

Play was interrupted Friday morning by a thunderstorm and resumed two hours later. At the time, Liu was 4 up after nine holes. Liu made two birdies on the front nine and did not have any bogeys.

On the 10th hole, Liu made a great chip shot to within a foot of the pin, allowing her to easily birdie the hole. Chung’s birdie attempt just rimmed out, putting Liu 5 up.

Liu made another birdie on 11, sinking a 10-foot putt.

Chung answered on 12 with a curling, 30-foot birdie putt to pull back within 5, but she bogeyed the 13th to end the match.
