Monmouth 'In the Mood' for Musical Revue

Songs of the 1940s to be celebrated with performance at the Pollak Theatre at 7 p.m. Sunday

This Sunday, the Pollak Theatre at Monmouth University will turn into a time machine of sorts, as “In the Mood: A 1940’s Musical Revue,” will be performed at 7 p.m.

The performance includes a big band orchestra, complete with singers and swing dancers. Music performed during the show will include the songs of Frank Sinatra, Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Harry James, Erskin Hawkins and the Andrew Sisters.

Many consider this era of music to be one of the most influential times in the 20th  century, as the United States was about to enter World War II, and the nation was just coming off the Great Depression. Music from this era varied from big ballads to music that would help sustain morale in America during the wartime effort.

“In the Mood,” kicked off in 1992, which was 50 years after the United States got involved in World War II. There was just one show performed in Washington D.C., but it was so popular that there were many repeat engagements in the years that followed.

Later on, through work with the USO organization, “In the Mood,” toured across the United States, and later made trips to perform in Canada and various spots in Europe. This musical group had also become so popular that in 1997, they had the honor of performing at the presidential inauguration of Bill Clinton.

Following their performance at the Pollak Theatre on Sunday, they will go on to perform in various places around Pennsylvania, Indiana and Ohio in the coming weeks. This will be followed up by a few more dates in Canada, and later this year the group will kick off a tour of Australia.
