Around the World at Meadowbrook School

The Eatontown School held a heritage fair celebrating the food, music and history of students' ancestral homelands

Third grade students at Meadowbrook School in Eatontown celebrated the end of the school year by taking a trip around the world—without even leaving the building. At the Meadowbrook Heritage Fair on May 27, children shared what they had learned about the countries from which their families had come to America.

Visitors to the fair were greeted by children in the costumes of their ancestral
homelands—13 countries in all. Over several months of research, the students had
developed original projects to illustrate interesting facts about the history, geography and culture of each land.

Guests enjoyed: windmills from the Netherlands; a mountain climber from the Italian Alps; a palm tree from the Dominican Republic, Indian rangoli; English royal guards; Portuguese soccer shirts; German pretzels; Russian ballet slippers; Turkish tiles; Irish fairies; South Korean kites; Ojos de Dios (God’s Eyes) from Mexico; and the Red Dragon from Wales.

Parents contributed delicious samples of native cuisine for all to enjoy. The colorful
displays were accompanied by PowerPoint presentations on each country. Teacher Donna Ahrens then gathered her students on stage, where they entertained their guests with a song called “Hello to all the Children of the World”.
