Do You Believe in Magic?
Tinton Falls Library hosted a magic show on Wednesday that blended sleight of hand with learning on July 20.
With the appearance of magician Drew Cardella, the Tinton Falls Library Summer Reading Club participants enjoyed a really “cool” treat on a hot summer afternoon. High energy and engaging to even the youngest kids in the audience, Cardella’s magic made for an enchanting experience.
On the edge of their seats with anticipation, over 40 kids gathered inside the Tinton Falls Municipal Center Community Room on Wednesday. Drew immediately had the kids intrigued and laughing when flowers appeared at the top of a green bouquet every time he turned around to reach for another trick. The kids chanted “Hey, Drew” in an attempt to bring his attention to the flowers, making it a lively way to get the crowd going from the start of his show.
A wide range of entertaining tricks for the children followed suit. How did he make a rope stand up on its own with only one hand holding on? Or make the peanut butter and jelly switch places and then return back to their original spot? References to using the library and the children filling their minds with “good” information by reading books were present throughout his performance. He even had a disappearing and reappearing bookworm working it’s magic.

In the true spirit of learning, Drew did pick a basic trick to teach the children how to practice themselves. It went over so well, evidenced by the fact that my kids came home and practiced it for quite some time before putting on their own in-house magic show for the evening!
When I asked Drew after the show about how long he’s been doing magic, he chuckled and replied “since I was about six years old.” Personally, I am sure that today he inspired many similarly-aged audience members to pursue learning some magic of their own.
