Eatontown Sawa Sushi Owner Sentenced to 20 Months in Prison

The owners of the Eatontown and Pier Village restaurants plead guilty to not paying payroll taxes and harboring unlawful aliens.

The owners of and Long Branch were sentenced on Wednesday for their roles in failing to pay payroll taxes and harboring unlawful aliens, according to a release from the office of the United States Attorney District of New Jersey.

The owner of the Eatontown location had provided housing for the illegal workers in two properties he had purchased in Long Branch and transported them to and from the restaurant using a company vehicle.

Mour Chor Tung, a/k/a "Kenny Tung," 45, of Colts Neck was the owner and manager of the Eatontown location at 42 State Route 36 and was sentenced to 20 months in prison. His brother-in-law, Sin Ching Chang, a/k/a "Alton Chang," 35 of Long Branch owned and managed the Pier Village restaurant and was sentenced to 24 months probation.

Tung and Chang entered their guilty pleas before U.S. District Judge Claire C. Cecchi, who also imposed the sentences Wednesday in Newark federal court.

According to the release, Tung failed to collect $263,523 in payroll taxes from employees at the Eatontown restaurant from 2007 through 2010. Chang failed to collect $57,048 in payroll taxes from Long Branch employees in 2007.

Tung also provided employment to unlawful aliens and allowed several of them to use Social Security numbers issued to other individuals and provided payment in the identities of the numbers' true holders.

In addition to the prison terms, Tung was sentenced to two years of supervised release and fined $10,000. Chang was fined $3,000.
