Falcons' Golf Tees Up for Another Season and Head Football Coach Resigns

Monmouth Regional insider, AJ Visconti, brings us up to speed on the week in high school sports.

This year's Monmouth Regional Golf team has a lot of returning starters that look to improve on last year's strong season when they placed fifth as a team in Monmouth County.

Returning players include senior--and varsity football player-- Mike Brown, and juniors Justin Argyriou, a varsity basketball player, Mike Forgione, Matt Obrero and Steven Farkue. Coach Brian Evans, also a math teacher at Monmouth, led the team to earn that fifth place in his first year as head coach.

Brown said he is excited about this season: "I can't wait to start competing as a team with all of our returning golfers and our returning head coach. Our goal for this season is for our team to place third in the County Tournament and to be able to place in the State Tournament."

Scrimmages for our spring sports teams will start Monday, March 14 as the softball team plays Toms River South, and then Toms River North on Tuesday. The baseball team also plays Toms River North on Tuesday, and they will play a double-header on Friday at home against Seton Hall and Old Tappan. The lacrosse team also has its first scrimmage on Tuesday against Toms River North, and they take on St. John Vianney on Thursday.

Finally, we heard last week that Falcons' varsity football coach Sal Spampanato announced that he has resigned after four years leading the team. He coached the team to the second playoff berth in school history last season and has brought our program forward in the four years he has been at the helm.
