Atlantic City May Be First To Allow Beer, Alcohol On Boardwalk

Atlantic City may become the first town to allow an open container of beer, alcohol on the boardwalk.

You may soon be able to bring that beer on the boardwalk in at least one Jersey Shore town.

The Atlantic City Council will consider an ordinance Wednesday that would allow people to walk the Boardwalk with one alcoholic drink - such as beer - in an open plastic container.

The drink must be purchased from a licensed establishment connected to the Boardwalk and the container must show the name or logo of that establishment, according to the ordinance published on Atlantic City's website.

The open containers would be permitted on the Boardwalk between Albany and Metropolitan Avenues, and you must be 21 years old.

The ordinance is sponsored by Councilman Kaleem Shabazz and will be considered on first reading Wednesday night during the council's 5 p.m. meeting

The ordinance would be effective "at least for the trial period of the summer 2016 season and to facilitate and encourage pedestrian traffic between and among those food and beverage establishments."

Boardwalks that are known as night New Jersey Shore hotspots do not allow an open container of alcohol on their boardwalks, including Belmar, Long Branch, Point Pleasant Beach, Seaside Heights and Wildwood.
