The recreational basketball league has returned to Long Branch! Each night the players are beyond excited to get on the court and showcase their skills. Commissioner of the league, Donald Covin, along with the director of recreation Carl Jennings, and the Long Branch Recreation Department have assembled many volunteer coaches and players from 3rd through 8th grade who engage in exciting and passionate games three nights a week. Beyond the competitive games, players also have the opportunity to work with coaches on improving their skills and fundamentals while increasing their knowledge of the game. Each and every night these players leave the gym not only with increased confidence about their newly acquired skills, but with a smile on their faces. They are creating lasting relationships all while having fun!
On Monday nights, our 3rd-4th grade division get to work and focus on their skills and fundamentals through a series of drills. Then on Thursday nights they take what they learn and play in intense games at the Gregory Elementary School. Our 5th-8th grade division play their competitive games on Monday and Wednesday nights, and practice their skills and fundamentals on Thursday nights at Long Branch Middle School.
This league has been beneficial for all levels of athletes. All of the coaches have fully extensive basketball careers and backgrounds. Many of them coach year round in our local JJ Hoops AAU program. When the players are not playing, they are chanting, clapping, and cheering for their teammates which promotes teamwork and comradery. As soon as you enter the gym you can feel the passion and excitement felt during the games and it is contagious. This recreation league has proven to be a win-win for all of the young basketball lovers in our town. Long Branch youth players are working hard, learning more about the game of basketball, and having fun! The coaches have made it their mission to spread the love of the game throughout Long Branch.
