Man Who Drowned Off Long Branch Identified As NY Resident

His body was recovered in the ocean behind Rooney's restaurant at around 9:12 p.m. on Sunday.

LONG BRANCH, NJ — The man who drowned Sunday evening off the beach in Long Branch has been identified as Albert James Hendricks, 49, according to Long Branch Public Safety Director Domingos Saldida.

He is a New York resident originally from Ohio and was in the Monmouth County area visiting friends.

His body was recovered in the water behind Rooney’s oceanfront restaurant at around 9:12 p.m. on Sunday, Saldida previously told Patch.

Two other swimmers were rescued by Long Branch personnel Sunday night, Saldida said. Both survived, and were taken to local hospitals, but Hendricks did not.

There were more than a dozen drownings at the Jersey Shore in summer 2022. Multiple drownings have occurred in September, as people continue to swim at beaches where the lifeguards already left for the season:

On Sept. 14, a Middletown man drowned while swimming at an unguarded beach at Ortley Beach.

On Sept. 10, a man was pulled from the surf at Loveladies Beach on Long Beach Island; he was later pronounced dead. The beach wasn’t guarded.

On Sept. 8, a Pennsylvania man died after drowning at an unprotected beach near 12th Street in Ocean City.
