Monmouth Medical Center Presents June Community Health Education Programs

DIABETES SELF-MANAGEMENT SERIES
Fridays, June 3, 10, 17 and 24 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. or
Mondays, June 13, 20, 27 and July 11 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Learn how to manage your diabetes by attending this four-session diabetes education program focusing on diet, nutrition, glucose monitoring, medications, meal plans, prevention and treatment of diabetes complications, dining out and benefits of exercise. The program is taught by a registered nurse and a registered dietitian/certified diabetes educator. It will be held at The Center for Diabetes Education at Monmouth Medical Center, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. For information and to register for classes, call 732-923-5025. Program attendees will need a doctor’s prescription and will be billed to Medicare or your insurance carrier.

INSOMNIA
Friday, June 3 from 11 to 11:30 a.m.
Do you find it difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep? Are racing thoughts or worries keeping you awake? Sleep disorders are more common than you think. Insomnia can sap your energy, affecting memory, mood, health and quality of life. This program, led by Carol Palmer, BA, Monmouth Medical Center Instructor, will teach you proven ways to quiet your mind, neutralize anxiety and relieve tension to enjoy more restful sleep. The Insomnia program takes place at the Monmouth County Library’s Eastern Branch, located at 1001 Route 35 in Shrewsbury. Registration is required by calling 1-866-941-8188. Free.

FIVE WISHES
Tuesday, Junes 7 from 11 a.m. to noon

There are many things in life that are out of our hands. The Five Wishes document gives you a way to control something very important – how you are treated if you get seriously ill. This document is an easy-to-complete form that lets you say exactly what you want. Once filled out and properly signed, it is valid under the laws of most states. During this program, sponsored by Barnabas Health Hospice and Palliative Care, Claire Verruni, RN, CHPN, Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Liaison, will discuss this valuable document. This program, for those ages 60 and older, will take place at the Howell Senior Center, located at 251 Preventorium Road in Howell. Pre-registration is required by calling 732-938-4500, ext. 2554.

TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR HEALTH FAIR
Wednesday, June 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Learn everything you need to know about healthy aging! This event, co-sponsored by the Social Community Activities network (SCAN), is open to the public and will feature free healthcare screenings provided by Monmouth Medical Center. TINTON FALLS COMMUNITY HEALTH FAIR – NAVIGATING THE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM
Friday, June 10 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Healthcare systems can be confusing, learn how to properly navigate them with Monmouth Medical Center. This event, hosted by the Borough of Tinton Falls, will focus on health and wellness and will feature free health screenings provided by Monmouth Medical Center. This fair will take place at Borough Hall located at 556 Tinton Ave in Tinton Falls. Free.

SAFE SITTER
Saturday, June 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Presented by certified Safe Sitter instructors, this program teaches 11- to 13-year-olds to be responsible, creative babysitters with special emphasis on how to handle emergencies. Participants will receive instruction materials, a program completion certificate and a subscription to Safe Sitter magazine. The class will end with a graduation ceremony, participants are asked to bring a mid-morning snack and a lunch. This course will be held at Monmouth Medical Center, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. To register, call 732-923-6992. $50 per child.

COLOR YOUR STRESS AWAY
Wednesday, June 22 from 1 to 2 p.m.
Join the growing trend of adult coloring! Experience this former childhood activity with fresh eyes as you de-stress, unwind and enjoy the relaxation and health benefits that coloring offers. This class, presented by Linda Grimes, RN at Monmouth Medical Center, includes a coloring book and set of pencils. Color Your Stress Away takes place at the Monmouth Mall, located at Routes 35 and 36 in Eatontown. Registration is required by calling 732-542-1326.

N.J. BARIATRIC AND METABOLIC INSTITUTE (NJBMI) AT MONMOUTH MEDICAL CENTER: NEW PATIENT WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY LECTURE
Thursday, June 23 from 6 to 7 p.m.
If you are 100 pounds or more overweight, you can’t afford to miss this physician-led educational lecture which will explain everything you need to know about weight-loss surgery. For those considering a bariatric procedure, this program, presented by Frank Borao, MD and Steven Binenbaum, MD, board-certified, laparoscopic-fellowship–trained surgeons, will offer the most up-to-date information on gastric bypass surgery, gastric banding and sleeve gastrectomy. Attendees are invited to join the monthly support group following the lecture. This program will be held at Monmouth Medical Center, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch.
