CREATING HEALTH: HOW TO OVERCOME THE 10 MOST COMMON OBSTACLES TO LIVING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE
Tuesday, September 16 from 4 to 5 p.m.
Statistically speaking, about 80% of chronic diseases and conditions can be prevented and managed through lifestyle choices. While most of us know intellectually that we need to eat healthier, get more exercise and manage stress, there’s a gap between having good intentions and actually finding the time and energy to make it happen. Attend this empowering class to begin to shift your mindset and create momentum to transform your lifestyle behaviors to improve your health. During this program, Jill Garaffa, OTR/L, PCC, ELI-MP, will provide practical tools and strategies to get started. Carbohydrate counting, otherwise known as “carb counting,” is a meal planning technique for managing your blood glucose levels. If the most popular comfort foods seem to contain lots of carbohydrates and fat, how do you include them into a diabetes meal plan? This program, presented by Autumn Dempsey, RN, Certified Diabetes Educator at Monmouth Medical Center, will teach you helpful tips on getting the most from your carbs as well as teach you to make your each carb serving count. Stop by the Monmouth Medical Center tables and get a step up on your health this fall. This Health Fair, sponsored by Monmouth Medical Center, ABBA Medical Transportation, Chapin Hill Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, will feature raffle prizes and refreshments. SAFE SITTER

Presented by certified Safe Sitter instructors, this program teaches 11- to 13-year-olds to be responsible, creative babysitters with special emphasis on how to handle emergencies. There are many things in life that are out of our hands. The Five Wishes document gives you a way to control something very important – how you are treated if you get seriously ill. This document is an easy-to-complete form that lets you say exactly what you want. Once filled out and properly signed, it is valid under the laws of most states. During this program, presented by Barnabas Health Hospice and Palliative Care, Claire Verruni, RN, CHPN, Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Liaison, will discuss the ins and outs of this valuable document. The Sept. 23 program, for ages 60 and older, will take place at the Keyport Senior Center, located at 100 Second Avenue in Keyport. While membership is not necessary, registration is required. N.J. BARIATRIC AND METABOLIC INSTITUTE (NJBMI) AT MONMOUTH MEDICAL CENTER: NEW PATIENT WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY LECTURE

Tours are available for pediatric patients preparing to have a surgical procedure in the Cranmer Ambulatory Surgery Center at Monmouth Medical Center. Tours are designed to reduce anxiety giving children a hands-on experience with medical equipment and visitation to areas they will encounter on the day of their surgery.
