Monmouth Spring Teams Take Early Control of the Season

Patch gets the lowdown on spring sports happenings at Monmouth Regional from insider and student, AJ Visconti.

Monmouth regional spring sports teams accentuated the positive this week.

Falcons’ Girls Lacrosse

The girls’ lacrosse team improved to 3-0 last week with its games against Long Branch and Holmdel. The girls scored 21 goals in the Holmdel game and held Long Branch to only 7 points.

Senior Tara Patti scored a personal best, 11 goals, to lead the Falcons to victory in the Long Branch game. Once again, Tara led the team in scoring with eight goals in its win over Holmdel on Saturday. 

In a quality win over Holmdel with many contributors, freshman Jenna Eustace scored five goals, and senior Haley Bowen and junior Courtney Washeleski each had a goal apiece.  Haley also had assist to go along with junior Jackie Gage’s three assists and junior Jodi Taylor’s assist. Junior Amanda Breaud also had 10 saves against Holmdel.

The final score was 15-10 and the Falcon lacrosse team looks to keep rolling this week against rival Ocean Township on Tuesday at Monmouth Regional.

Falcons’ Softball

The softball team went 2-0 this week against Rumson-Fair Haven and Shore Regional.  They won 3-1 against Rumson behind sophomore Colleen Phelan’s three RBIs, and won against Shore Regional off a hit by freshman Laura Douglas in extra innings. Her game-winning RBI was only one of the hits from her 4-4 performance on Saturday, and she also starts in the outfield.  The Falcons won 6-5 in eight innings, also behind a strong 10-strikeout performance by sophomore Sam Smith.

The softball team will play at Ocean on Monday afternoon and they will host Freehold Boro on Tuesday,and is looking to keep its winning-streak going.

Falcons’ Baseball

The baseball team, after a rough loss against Ocean on Wednesday, got back on track on Saturday with its 12-0 victory over Shore Regional. Senior Max Schmardel, who started the game as pitcher, went  3-3 with two doubles and five RBIs. Max also hit a huge home run in their 8-1 win over Rumson-Fair Haven on Monday. Seniors Tom DenBleyker and Chris Lastella each had two hits, and they combined for five runs. Senior Danny Carroll also had two RBIs. The Falcons host Freehold Boro on Tuesday.

Falcons’ Boy Tennis

Players from the boys’ varsity tennis team completely swept its opponents on Thursday against Long Branch. Brothers junior Carlo and freshman Ivan Romano, along with senior Bobby Crimi, led the way by winning each of their matches. In the doubles matches, seniors Joe Lee and Matt Baldassarre had a very strong performance. The tennis team plays away against Red Bank Catholic on Tuesday.

Falcons’ Golf

The golf team looks to start off its competition against other high schools with a home match against Freehold Boro on Monday, and an away match against Long Branch on Tuesday.

There were also some other winners from the FCCLA competitions recently. Senior Patrick Kowtko won the silver medal in the food innovation competition. Senior Mike Brown, a varsity football player who will be attended the Culinary Institute of America next fall, placed first in the bread basics competition, where Junior Kayla Wall, a varsity field hockey player, won the silver medal. Junior Cara Comey placed first for the cake she created at the competition and for her gold medal, she was awarded a $12,000 scholarship. Senior Darnell Dechalus-Turpin won bronze medal in fashion design for the shirt that he had created. Last but not least, Junior Lakeisha Billingsley, who is also on the track team, won the silver medal for her efficient food creation that could be frozen and made for a whole family.

The College Count Down

Here are some more college decisions:

  • Anthony Truncale, a member of the football and baseball teams, will be going to East Stroudsburg University.
  • Brittany Beveridge, who plays tennis on the girls’ varsity team, will be attending Florida Atlantic University.
  • Danielle Brown, a varsity soccer player, will be going to Loyola University.
  • Nicolette Mauro, varsity captain cheerleader and softball player, will be attending Stockton College.
  • Matt Showanes, a varsity football player and captain, will be going to Widener University.
  • Steve David, varsity captain cross-country and track runner, will be attending Ramapo University.
  • Kylynn Garingalao, also a varsity tennis player, will be going to St. John’s University.
