Monmouth's Rooney Named NEC Defensive Player of the Year
Sophomore guard honored for stellar season

The Monmouth University women's basketball team has had an incredible season, and one of its key players has been honored for her stellar play.
Sophomore guard Erin Rooney was named the Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Year on Tuesday. She routinely guarded the other team's best scorer and ranked second on the team with 32 steals.
Rooney was also named second team all-conference along with teammate Alysha Womack.

Rooney also had a solid offensive season, scoring 11 points per game and made 84.9 percent of her free throws, good for third in the NEC. Her 80 assists tied for the team lead as well.
Her play helped Monmouth secure the second seed in the upcoming NEC Tournament, where the Hawks will host Quinnipiac on Saturday, March 5 at 3 p.m.
