The fifth annual Political Science Club 5K walk/run was held Friday, May 2, on the beautiful Monmouth University campus. For the past four years, proceeds from the event have benefitted The Kortney Rose Foundation (KRF) for pediatric brain tumor research funding.
Sponsors of the 5K included the Sociology Club and Student Government Association (SGA) who chose this event as this year’s charity event. Leading up to the race, the SGA raised more than $1,000 at a gift auction to also benefit KRF. Aramark also donated bananas, oranges, and water for the race. Leftovers from these donations were given to the Jersey Shore Rescue Mission in Asbury Park, NJ.
Three Monmouth University students took the top awards for the men: Mike O’Connor - 19:29:33, Chris Torpy - 19:55.19, and Ryan Kelly - 22:48:94. The first place woman with a time of 25:05.48 was Sociology Professor Jennifer McGovern, second with a time of 19:55.19 was Marilyn Cusick '97 manager of cashiering at Monmouth University, and in third place was marketing freshman Erica Villa – 25:25.34.

A total of $1,000 was raised and will be donated through The Kortney Rose Foundation to the pediatric brain tumor research program at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
The Kortney Rose Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charity that was set up by Kortney’s parents, after her death in 2006 from a rare brain tumor, to create her legacy of helping other children through the promise of research. Since inception the foundation has built a playground in Kortney’s name, donated over three quarters of a million of dollars to the pediatric brain tumor research program at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and was instrumental in passing legislation naming May as brain tumor awareness month in the State of New Jersey. http://www.thekortneyrosefoundation.org
