Special MLK Day Event Held at Seabrook
Rev. Dr. Gil Caldwell Shares His Memories of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with Seabrook Community

On January 12, Rev. Dr. Gil Caldwell, a Civil Rights advocate who was a friend of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., gave a presentation to honor the life and ideals of Dr. King at Seabrook, an Erickson Living retirement community in Tinton Falls, New Jersey. More than 60 employees and staff participated in the special event.
Caldwell shared his experience of his work with Dr. King and how his time with him shaped his future as a footman during the Civil Rights Movement. He also discussed the need for all generations to face issues of racism.
“At Seabrook, the residents and staff have been working hard to create a community where diversity of thought and expression are valued, celebrated and respected, and our commonalities are embraced. As we honor the legacy of Dr. King, this special presentation by Dr. Caldwell provided the opportunity to hear first-hand accounts of the early days of the Civil Rights movement and will encourage the difficult discussion about racism,” said Pastoral Ministries Manager David Bowman.

"It’s exciting for me to lead a group that is willing to talk openly about difficult issues such as racism. We, as Seniors, have the opportunity to engage in conversations of importance without fear of rejection-- that is empowering as we work together to address the challenges of our day," said Caldwell
The event was co-sponsored by the Erickson Living Values Group and Seabrook’s Diversity and Inclusion Steering Group, a team of employees who support the efforts of enhancing diversity for staff and residents of Seabrook.
