"Although they will not continue in the 2012 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2012 competition by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualify Test (PSAT/NMSQT)," the release states.
The other student who has been honored is Senior Raymond Muñoz, who has been acknowledged by the College Board (CollegeBoard.org) as a 2011-2012 National Hispanic Scholar via the organization’s National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP).

The NHRP was initiated in 1983 to identify outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students, the release states.
The 5,000 students selected by the NHRP are at least one quarter Hispanic/Latino and achieved a minimum score for their region.
Students with GPAs of 3.5 or higher are designated as Scholars, and those with GPAs of 3.0 to 3.49 are designated as Honorable Mentions, according to the release.
