What would it feel like to suddenly hear that America had declared independence from Britain?
On Saturday, September 19, the Washington Township Historical Society invites the community to experience that dramatic moment firsthand during “1776 — The News of Independence Reaches German Valley,” an immersive living history evening at the historic Old Stone Church grounds in Long Valley.
Step back 250 years for a fun, lively, and entertaining evening as news from Philadelphia reaches German Valley. Guests will able, if they choose, to assume the roles of local residents — farmers, widows, soldiers, merchants, and others — and join in the conversations, questions, and uncertainty surrounding independence.
No costumes are required — just come ready to experience history in a whole new way.

 <li>Would independence be exciting… or frightening? </li>
 <li>What risks would families face? </li>
 <li>Would you support the cause? </li>
</ul>
“This program is designed to make history personal while creating a memorable and enjoyable, fun evening for the community,” said John Reed, president of WTHS. “Participants won’t just hear history — they’ll experience the conversations, uncertainty, and excitement that ordinary people may have felt in 1776.”
The evening will feature:
<ul>
 <li>Live authentic period music </li>
 <li>Delicious appetizers with local cheeses, cold meats, veggies, fruit and more</li>
 <li>Local wines, beer, cider and other beverages </li>
 <li>An interactive atmosphere on the grounds of the 250-year-old Stone Church</li>
</ul>
The event takes place Saturday, Sept. 19 at 5:00 PM (rain date Sept. 20).
