My Dog's Got Class

Does your well-mannered dog love strangers? Do you like to volunteer your time and make people smile? Do you want to share your love for dogs and your dog’s love with like-minded people who don’t have that opportunity? Then you are a Pet Therapy Dog team in the making. Don’t know where to start? The Pet Therapy Prep Class will help you prepare to become a certified therapy dog team. In this 6-week course, you will review behaviors that will help move your dog forward in their therapy dog training. PRE-REQUISITE for this course is completion of the Basic class. Your dog should have a reliable sit, down, stay, recall and loose leash walking skills, in the presence of other dogs and people. Dogs should be at least 10 months of age at the start of the class. Rescue dogs should be with their owners at least 6 months. Payments MUST be made upon registration in order to secure a spot in the class.

In 1759, Christoffel Vought built a home and settled in Huntedon County.In December 1776, Vought and his son John led a party of Hunterdon Loyalists on a daring journey through rebel assaults to reach British forces stationed at New Brunswick. John Vought donned the distinctive green uniform of the New Jersey Volunteers and fought against American independence.
David Overaker, Board President of the 1759 Vought House, will tell the fascinating story of the Vought family from their arrival in the colony of New Jersey in 1710 through their Loyalist activities during the American Revolution and their fate after the war. .Register to attend this event on the library's website, wtpl.org.

What would it feel like to suddenly hear that America had declared independence from Britain?
On Saturday, September 19, the Washington Township Historical Society invites the community to experience that dramatic moment firsthand during “1776 — The News of Independence Reaches German Valley,” an immersive living history evening at the historic Old Stone Church grounds in Long Valley.
Step back 250 years for a fun, lively, and entertaining evening as news from Philadelphia reaches German Valley. Guests will able, if they choose, to assume the roles of local residents — farmers, widows, soldiers, merchants, and others — and join in the conversations, questions, and uncertainty surrounding independence.
No costumes are required — just come ready to experience history in a whole new way.

 <li>Would independence be exciting… or frightening? </li>
 <li>What risks would families face? </li>
 <li>Would you support the cause? </li>
</ul>
“This program is designed to make history personal while creating a memorable and enjoyable, fun evening for the community,” said John Reed, president of WTHS. “Participants won’t just hear history — they’ll experience the conversations, uncertainty, and excitement that ordinary people may have felt in 1776.”
The evening will feature:

 <li>Live authentic period music </li>
 <li>Delicious appetizers with local cheeses, cold meats, veggies, fruit and more</li>
 <li>Local wines, beer, cider and other beverages </li>
 <li>An interactive atmosphere on the grounds of the 250-year-old Stone Church</li>

The event takes place Saturday, Sept. 19 at 5:00 PM (rain date Sept. 20).

An Essex County home inspector has built a free website that lets anyone look up the public records behind a New Jersey property &mdash; building permits, flood zones, fire history, property taxes, and more &mdash; by typing in an address.
The site, Permit &amp; Parcel (oprasearch.app), covers all 564 New Jersey municipalities and pulls only from official sources: state and county databases, FEMA flood maps, and the towns' own municipal codes. There's no account, no email capture, and no cost.
"I kept watching buyers fall in love with a house before anyone checked the paper trail &mdash; the open permits, the flood zone, what the town actually requires when a home changes hands," said Leo Betancor, a Certified Master Inspector based in Cedar Grove and the founder of the site. "All of that is public record. It just wasn't in one place anyone could actually use."
Alongside the main lookup, the site includes free single-purpose tools: a lead-safe inspection lookup showing which of the two state-required inspection methods each town uses under New Jersey's lead paint law, a searchable directory of every DCA-certified lead evaluation and abatement contractor sorted by distance, a fire-incident map built from more than 40 years of state fire records, and a radon map covering every municipality.
A companion site, njflood.zone, gives instant FEMA flood-zone answers for any New Jersey address &mdash; built after the federal government shutdown left FEMA's own map site unreliable &mdash; running on the site's own servers with the complete flood map data for the state loaded locally.
The project was recently featured in <a href="https://www.tapinto.net/towns/east-hanover-slash-florham-park/columns/at-home-with-holly/articles/deep-dive-conversations-what-the-house-won-t-tell-you" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">TAPinto</a>'s "At Home with Holly" column.
