Long Valley Teen's Volunteerism Recognized With President's Service Award

Rebekah Katz volunteers as a cheerleading coach and Hebrew language mentor.

Rebekah Katz doesn’t have much free time on her hands, and if she did, it would probably be used to help even more people.

The 18-year-old Long Valley resident and West Morris Central senior has been honored with the prestigious President’s Volunteer Service Award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and countries.

Katz was nominated by the high school in the fall in recognition of her volunteer service.

Katz has been a volunteer coach for the Long Valley Raiders Cheerleading squad for the last half decade, working with third, fourth, and fifth grade girls to teach them the value of hard work, respect, and commitment. She also spends time as a Hebrew language tutor to children with special needs who are preparing for their B’nai Mitzvot.

“I haven’t ended world hunger. I haven’t traveled to [under developed] countries to distribute clean water and clothing,” said Katz in a statement. “But I have touched the lives of many young people who will one day replace me and my peers as the youth of the world. I have helped shape young minds to be accepting, hard-working, and diligent. They will be the service leaders of tomorrow.”
