Two of Long Valley's 3 Varsity teams completed their regular seasons this week, while the Northwest team will close out its season next Sunday against League-leading Sussex at West Morris.
The Tri-County team split a quad match to secure their Division lead, and will now take on Mount Olive at Mount Olive February 12th for the National Division championship.
The Northwest team lost a heart-breaker to North Hunterdon, only their second loss of the season, another Long Valley dual decided by one match. Our program tag line is "every wrestler counts," and this season is a perfect illustration of that.
Our Future Stars team continues to roll, beating Sparta Pride on Thursday, Roxbury Friday, and a good Randolph team Saturday. They will continue their dual meet season for a couple weeks, then look to defend their League title on February 23rd at West Morris High School. A team that began the season very young and with few expectations has matured into a force to be reckoned with under the direction of coaches Tom Whittemore, Rick DeFrance, and Mike Sickles (a former Tri-County coach of the year) who has returned to the program after his boys graduated WMC last year.
Last but not least, Long Valley's Grade School team completed its regular season with arguably the most significant win in program history, beating powerhouse South Plainfield on Thursday night, ending their 5-year winning streak. The team completed its regular season against Del Val Friday night, honoring graduating 8th graders before the match: Chris Parisi, Marco Gaita (a member of the Wolfpack program since he was 5 years old), Jonathan Vazquez, Matt Liberato, Ethan Dolan, Robert Rosen, Grayson Dolan, Trey Zgombic (also a Wolfpack member since age 5), Jacob Rutter, Matt Zgombic, and Tommy Pellegrino. The team bested Del Val in a close match, finishing the regular season 15-2 as they prepare for the team championship tournament Saturday at Warren Hills High School.
