Washington Twp. Named Among Safest Towns in New Jersey

Consumer resource site ranks municipality 14 out of 474 Garden State towns.

Do you hear that? It’s the sound of safety.

According to a newly released data report from a consumer resource website, Washington Township in Morris County is one of the safest towns in the state of New Jersey.

The small, westernmost town in Morris County was ranked 14th out of 474 when it comes to overall crime safety, garnering a score of 48 by valuepenguin.com. The state average was 325, and the lower the score, the better.

Washington Township was ranked as the second safest Morris County town, behind Chatham at number six, with New Hanover receiving the overall top ranking with a score of nine.

The report also gave Parsippany the state’s best score for large city rankings – towns with populations above 45,000 people – and a ranking of 108 overall.

Valuepenguin.com broke its rankings down into large, midsize, and small city categories. Washington Township falls in the small city list for towns with less than 20,000 residents. The top five safest small cities went to New Hanover, Harrington, Haworth, Pennington, and Old Tappan, respectively.

On the other end of the spectrum, the least safe five small cities went to Wildwood (overall highest score in the state), Asbury Park, Avalon, Sea Isle City, and Brooklawn, respectively.

The site used FBI crime statistics from 2013 to compile its list and based it on per capita.
