West Morris Central Boys Soccer Off to Strong Start
WMC Boys Soccer Beats Voorhees 2-1 in Solid Clash
West Morris Central Boys Soccer got their preseason off to a strong start Tuesday 8/30, with a 2-1 victory over a solid Voorhees squad. Both teams battled hard in the 90 degree heat out on the turf, with a scoreless first half. Senior Sean Krentz broke open the scoring with a goal off a corner kick from Junior Ryan Han at the 62 minute mark. Voorhees evened the score to 1-1 off a penalty kick due to a foul in the box, but WMC quickly answered back with a goal from Senior Mason Gough on a pass from Senior Captain Sam Hanington with 8 minutes left to the game, holding on for the win.
WMC set themselves up for tough scrimmages to prepare for a challenging regular season schedule. Next scrimmage is against County Champion Randolph on the road Thursday followed by Mountain Lakes, also on the road, Saturday morning.
"I have no idea what to expect from the team this season but the boys are the most coachable group in my 9 years and have a great collective spirit - our opponents will underestimate us ONLY ONCE" remarked Varsity Assistant Coach Bob Hanington. Head Coach Steve Cukar added "We've been working hard all summer to develop our skills and perform at a high level. Randolph won the county last year, so tomorrow's scrimmage will be a great test for us as we prepare for the start of official games next week. Mountain Lakes also won their conference last year so we're in store for a couple more good scrimmages this week. Our conference is certainly competitive with tough opponents returning many of their top guys. I'm hoping that we can keep performing well this week so we can carry some momentum into the home opener against Morris Hills. A strong performance against Morris Hills would really set the tone for the rest of our season. I'm looking forward to a great season with the boys".
WMC's season home opener will be against a tough Morris Hills squad on Thursday 9/8 at 4:30pm. Come cheer the team on!
