Bow Tie Cinema On The Agenda For Historic Preservation Committee

Discussion will continue on the future of the former movie theater.

MADISON, NJ — The Historic Preservation Committee will continue to discuss a redevelopment plan for 14 Lincoln Place at their Feb. 13 meeting. The site previously housed Bow Tie Cinema.

The meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 13 in Council Chambers on the second floor of the Hartley Dodge Memorial Building. The theater is the last item on the agenda.

The future of 14 Lincoln Place has been the subject of much debate after Parsippany-based Saxum Real Estate purchased the building. The company wants to tear the building down and replace it with condos. The plans include two screens for movies on the ground floor.

Planner Susan Blickstein, Assistant Borough Engineer Frank Russo, and Legal Counsel Vincent Loughlin will be at the meeting, as well as the architect for Saxum, Jeff Gertler.

Locals were surprised when Bow Tie Cinemas unexpectedly shuttered its doors in May of 2017. The Madison movie theater, last owned and operated by Bow Tie Cinemas, had shown movies for over 90 years. Bow Tie purchased the theater in 2013, and upgraded the projectors to digital and and added stadium seating.

The four-screen theater was sold in February to Parsippany-based Saxum Real Estate, and the company said it would continue to show movies, as Patch reported at the time. It was the borough's only theater.

Renovations to Bottle Hill Tavern are also on the agenda for the meeting.
