Cops: Loaded Handgun, 100 Rounds Found Inside Bag During Traffic Stop

Investigation continues after routine stop leads to major surprise, police report.

A routine traffic stop lead Mendham Township Police to a dangerous surprise recently when a vehicle search uncovered a gun and more than 100 rounds of ammunition.

Officer Robert Kalweit was on patrol at 7:09 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26 when he stopped a vehicle on Route 24 for broken lights, Lt. Ross Johnson said.

During the stop, Johnson said, “a number of indicators arose that made the officers on the stop suspicious of the driver and the vehicle.” After further investigation, police uncovered a loaded handgun inside a bag in the car, as well as more than 100 rounds of ammunition, Johnson said.

The male driver, who is not yet named because the incident is still under investigation, was charged with unlawful possession of a handgun in a motor vehicle and taken into custody.

The case is still being investigated and more details will be released.
