The film festival was organized by Shakti Jaising, an assistant professor of English, and Audrey Evrard, an assistant professor of French. Both are involved in teaching courses for the Film and Media Studies minor, which began last year.
“The films are international and take place in diverse locations,” said Jaising. “They’re contemporary and challenge cinematic and social conventions.”

A Drew professor will offer a brief introduction before each film and Jaising hopes that the films will generate a buzz among students and other viewers. “We want to develop a cinematic culture on campus and use films to raise cultural debate.”
The professors chose the films based on other faculty recommendations and research. Besides Hannah Arendt, other films that will be shown at the festival include: Holy Motors from France, The Reluctant Fundamentalist, from US/UK/Qatar, Blancanieves from Spain, Mother of George from Nigeria, Laurence Anyways from Canada/France and Reality from Italy.
The 2014 Drew University International Film Festival is sponsored by the President of Drew and the Dean’s Office of the College of Liberal Arts. Films were made available through Swank, Oscilloscope, Zeitgeist, the Breaking Glass Pictures and IFC Films.
