Drew University Comes Alive for Freshmen Move-in

Student volunteers help new arrivals settle into dorms.

again hummed with the sounds of daily life Wednesday as incoming freshman arrived with friends and family for the annual move-in day on the school's Madison campus.

The Class of 2015 was met by the friendly faces of student volunteers of the Orientation Committee, who helped unpack cars, lug boxes and suitcases into dorms, and get the new arrivals settled. It was a shrewd move by the school, easing the way for first-year students on a day usually full of stress and emotions.

"it's been so much fun, a really amazing experience," said orientation volunteer Anna Kasperowitz. "I like doing things to help people, and this is also a good icebreaker. I don't like sitting still."

Approximately 465 incoming freshman, from as far away as Georgia and Texas, spent the day finding their rooms among four co-ed freshman dorms on the wooded campus. Classes are scheduled to start on Monday.

Parents were grateful for the assistance, too.

"I think it's great, it's a very emotional day, too," said Lucy Baggott of Hamilton, N.J., who was dropping off her son, Alex. "It is very organized, and the kids are great."

"I definitely didn't expect this," said Alex. "Everyone's been really great."

Catrol Marra of Secaucus said, "The day was not as overwhelming as we thought it would be, even though I was dropping off my first child (son Gerard) at college."
