Family Event: Presbyterian Church of Madison Throws Annual Shrove Tuesday Party

The Presbyterian Church of Madison on 19 Green Ave is gearing up for its annual pancake race.

The event takes place in the churches own Fellowship Hall on February 21, 2012. Starting at 6pm, children and their families will eat “Pancakes for Dinner”, craft Mardi-Gras style masks and beads and party with music, popcorn and cotton candy. Many children choose to dress up in costumes, as is the tradition in many countries all over the world.

“It’s a great way to get more use out of those Halloween outfits”’ says member and mother Monika Stebbins. The event highlight is the annual pancake race “Parents vs Children”.

“It’s great fun, and every year, we have more guests,” says Brian Peterson, church member and head of Christian education, “Young and Old get together and have a great time”. The event usually winds down at around 8pm.

Shrove Tuesday is the last day before the beginning of lent. The tradition of the Pancake Race is said to have originated in 1445 when a housewife from Olney in England was so busy making pancakes that she forgot the time until she heard the church bells ringing for the service. She raced out of the house to church while still carrying her frying pan and pancake.
