Garbage Truck Fire Knocked Out Power In Madison

This is the second garbage truck fire in Morris County in the past month.

MADISON, NJ— A garbage truck fire early Tuesday morning closed roadways and knocked out power, Madison government officials said on Facebook.

The truck caught fire just before 6 a.m. on Tuesday near 255 Main Street. Flames engulfed the truck and shot up into the fair, hitting power lines and knocking out electricity to nearby residents.

Truck drivers had already evacuated the truck, and no one was injured.

Firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the flames one the gas tank had burned itself out. There was no garbage in the truck at the time, officials said.

The fire was extinguished by 8:30 a.m., and power is still being restored to homes. All homes along Main Street between Samson and Seaman can expect to lose power between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. as repairs continue.

This is the second garbage truck fire in Morris County in the past month. A truck explosion in Mendham destroyed four local businesses after the flames jumped from the engine to a strip mall.
