Rob Catalanello Vows to Keep Madison a Viable Choice for Seniors

The treatment of our senior citizens is important to Mayoral Candidate Rob Catalanello. He has issued the following prepared statement:

I was deeply concerned after seeing the advertisements published in the paper and the flyer that has been distributed regarding a “charity” fundraising campaign to buy some much need seating at our Senior Center. Our seniors deserve our respect, not the lip service currently proffered by our elected officials, but actual respect. There is nothing more disrespectful than a town with $15,000,000 in unencumbered surplus endorsing a “charity” fundraising effort, the legality of which is suspect, to provide the bare minimum furnishings at a borough-owned and managed facility. The council cannot carve $10,000 of the $15,000,000 to purchase some chairs for the senior center?

That is just the tip of the iceberg. Seniors are being forced out of our borough and state in record numbers. Our governor has been honest when he has told voters that if you don’t like paying high taxes, maybe NJ isn’t the place for you. The governor is much more candid than our current governing body, as they try to convince us how little we pay in taxes while selling us electricity at the highest rates in NJ, at a massive profit. That will change when I am elected Mayor.
In addition to requiring the CFO follow simple, easy to understand financial reporting methods, I propose the following:

1. Create a new electric rate class for seniors, ensuring they pay the lowest rates in Madison.
2. Revamp the senior transportation system. Ensure drivers and vehicles meet minimum safety requirements.
3. Perform an independent audit of our current Senior Services offering within 3 months of being elected.
4. Look for partnership opportunities with other entities such as the YMCA and local community and religious organizations to provide a more well-rounded program targeted at enhancing the quality of life for seniors.
5. Institute a tax rebate for seniors based on age and income metrics.

It is up to us to make the changes necessary to keep Madison a viable option for seniors. The governor has told us in which direction he is going to take the state (higher taxes on everything), so it is up to us to act locally to keep our seniors in their homes. Madison has the resources and the will to do what is right, and I believe I am the best qualified to lead the effort.
