Throat Singers, Soprano to Close da Camera Series at Drew

Award-winning Concert Hall will host two remaining performances.

’s award-winning Concert Hall will host the two remaining performances of the school’s 2011 da Camera Concerts series on Oct. 14 and Nov. 4. The series features music that complements the hall’s delicate, yet powerful, acoustics.

The Oct. 14 performance will feature Chirgilchin, an ensemble of master throat singers from Tuva in eastern Russia, a region known for its spiritual emphasis on nature. The renowned members of Chirgilchin—with authentic instruments and costumes—will perform ancient Tuvan folk songs, using extraordinary and exotic vocal overtone techniques to evoke natural sounds.

Starring in the Nov. 4 concert will be soprano Melissa Fogarty, who has been hailed by the New York Times for her “delirious abandon” on stage. Fogarty’s career in opera began when she performed as a child at the Metropolitan Opera and New York City Opera, where she later played the leading role in Purcell’s “King Arthur.”  Her performance at Drew will feature songs by Barber, Berberian, Bernstein and other American composers.
