Torey J. School Marks Walk to School Day

Elementary school organizes first of four walks this year.

If it's the first week of October, than it's International Walk to School Day.

marked the occasion by organizing the first of four formal walk-to-school days this year.

"The school's Green Committee organizes parent volunteers to be stationed at various street corners in the TJS neighborhood to help kids walk safely to school in the morning," said volunteer Penny Sullivan. "Children who walk are presented with "I walked" stickers when they reach school, and sometimes we have them sign their names to a poster which is later displayed on a school bulletin board."

Principal Michael Post also joins a group of children as they walk to school, which in the past has invited the local walking club Rose City Steppers to participate.

The school's other three walks are a Turkey Trot in late November, a Healthy Heart walk in February for National Heart Health Month, and an Earth Day walk in April, Sullivan said.
