Bergenfield Parents Had 'An Altercation' Before Murder-Suicide: Prosecutor

Mark Morris fatally shot and killed Annette Torres before killing himself; two handguns were found in the home, authorities said.

The dead parents of a Bergenfield boy had "an altercation" before they died in a murder-suicide, said Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal.

Authorities determined that during the altercation Mark Morris, 41, fatally shot and killed Annette Torres, 36, said Grewal said. The couple's son, who authorities only identified as "M.M." found them shortly before 10:30 a.m. Saturday and called 9-1-1, the prosecutor said.

Morris and Torres both died of gunshot wounds, the Bergen County Medical Examiner determined, authorities said.

The boy said his parents were not breathing and Bergenfield police officers forced their way into the home to conduct a welfare check at the West Clinton Avenue home, Grewal said. That is when they found Morris and Torres' bodies.

Detectives found two handguns, a .25-caliber automatic handgun and a .9mm handgun, Grewal said.

The Bergen County Sheriff's Department Ballistics Unit will analyze the guns, the prosecutor said.

A neighbor told NJ.com that the people living in the house were "so nice and quiet," the report said.
