We all have a difficult time “letting go” of cards, especially after the holidays. It’s so much fun to see those pictures of growing children and hear from relatives during this special time of year. But what do you do with those cards when the eggnog has worn off?
Here are some suggestions that might ease the anxiety of purging your leftovers:
- Recycle: The senders gave you cards to make you feel good, remembered and loved not to make you feel guilty if your discard their notes and pictures. Repeat after me, “Nothing bad is going to happen if I purge my Christmas cards.” Now you officially have permission to let go…
- Go Digital: Scan them and turn them into a screen saver, slide show or put them onto a digital photo frame.
- Create Next Year’s Tags: Save and cut out your favorites for gift tags. Use a hole punch for the corner and place a ribbon through it for instant tagging. How fun would it be for someone to open up a gift next year with their previous year’s card? They will think you are organized beyond words!
- Christmas Card Box: Use as the same concept as a photo box or a greeting card box that has tabbed dividers in it. On one tab write the date for this year and store your favorites ONLY. You can then determine how many years of memorabilia you want to save as keepsakes. Keep your “Holiday Card Box” with your seasonal décor and make sure you truly do look at these relics yearly or they will simply become clutter.
- Donate: You can donate the fronts of the cards to places such as nursery and primary schools that will use them for crafts.
- Repurpose: You can take off the backs and use the reverse side of the front for scratch paper. How fun would it be to see a pretty card instead of a Post It when you need to jot a note? Then when finished with the note you must recycle it or I’ve taught you nothing.
