Observations: Yanks, Knicks, Islanders and More

What I think about the current state of local sports, and how we hear about them

I think very quietly the Yankees and Girardi are off to a good start, over .500 playing crisp ball.

Mariano, ah Mariano. I savor each time he comes in much like the last year Jordan played with the Terri Bulls. There will never be another like number 42.

I think by now everybody agrees with me that the Yankees should pay Robbie Cano, now! Seven Hours and 17 RBIs at press time; can you say MVP? Can you say more, more, more money?

I think the Knicks have proven their critics (yours truly included) wrong so far with the thorough dismantling of Boston in the NBA playoffs. Do you ever notice how much better the day is whenever New York beats Boston? Me too.

I think one of the best least known stories in sports is about the New York Islanders.  They made the playoffs for the first time in six years and are clearly a team no one wants to face. That guy Tavares has a good shot at MVP and Capuano has a good shot at Coach of the Year.

I think Chris Carlino and Tim Capstraw are the best baskeball listen in the area.  Understated and under-apppreciated they have witnessed some awful basketball over the years and no are having fun watching the Nets in Brooklyn.

I think the New York Rangers would have made a coaching change if they had not made the playoffs this year and by the way nice trade made by Sather getting Gaborik outta here and three guys that can play in his place.

I think the only people that like Mets TV and radio broadcasts are the people in the broadcasts. Three men in a TV booth is jus awful and the incessant talking on radio drives me nuts. Note to Howie and Josh, just because you talk ALL THE TIME doesn't mean what you are saying is important. LET THE GAME BREATHE, LET THE LISTENER HEAR THE SOUNDS OF THE GAME AND STRATEGIZE, OK?

I think Kevin Burkhardt is exempt from the above analysis. Let it never be said that I'd speak badly of a fellow WGHT alumnus.

I think that commercials are threatening to kill sports on radio. It's bad enough that John and Suzyn can't get the names of the teams right, but with all the live reads and sponsorships and taped spots sometimes you just have to change the station. you know what I'm saying?

I think Michael Kay is a good sports talk show host, he is a lousy TV play by play guy.  It never ceases to amaze me how broadcasters that work in radio think they are qualified to work in TV without any preparation. The fact of the matter is many broadcasters are ignorant of one thing---THEY DON'T KNOW HOW OR WHEN TO SHUT UP.  Check out Vin Scully on one of the live look ins on the Baseball Network, he is excellence in broadcasting.

I think I will always miss Pat Summerall doing NFL football, seemed like he was the voice of the Giants in all those NFC East battles of the 80s and 90s.
