Car Destroyed In Driveway Fire

Driver said she got out of the car not long before it went up in flames

One car was fully destroyed and another was partially damaged after a car fire broke out in the driveway of a Windsor Terrace home after 2:30 p.m. Friday afternoon, Assistant Chief Ed Garza confirmed.

Homeowner Anita Franzetti said she was returning home from a local grocery store when she parked her Chrysler Town and Country and went into her Mahwah home Friday. She smelled something burning, and when she went back out to the car, it was engulfed in flames.

The Town and Country was completely “gutted” by the fire, and “shocks were sparking and exploding,” Garza said.

The fire, which officials say appeared to begin in the car’s engine, spread to a pickup truck that was parked next to it, and to the garage of the home, Garza said. The damage to the garage is “not too extensive, but it looks like the pickup will also need to be replaced.”

No one was injured as a result of the fire, but Franzetti, her family and neighbors were visibly shaken up by the incident. “I am very grateful for the volunteer firefighters and emergency responders,” she said.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this point, Garza said.
