Drop Off Unwanted, Expired Medications At Mahwah Day Saturday

Unused medications that remain in medicine cabinets are susceptible to theft and misuse, police said.

MAHWAH, NJ — Residents can drop off unwanted prescriptions at the Mahwah Police-Municipal Alliance booth at Mahwah Day.

The following items may be dropped off at the Project Medicine Drop box: Pills, patches, and inhalers. Liquids, medical waste, or syringes will not be accepted. (See related: Annual Mahwah Day Is Saturday)

Project Medicine Drop is a nationwide initiative to encourage people to safely dispose of unwanted or unused medications, especially opioids.

"By giving New Jerseyans a safe and secure method to dispose of unneeded medications, Project Medicine Drop helps prevent the abuse of these drugs," Police Chief James Batelli and Municipal Alliance President Carolyn Blake said in a joint statement.

Mahwah police and the alliance work together to provide a number of programs addressing social issues, including substance abuse, Narcan training, and youth programs.
