"Joyce Kilmer Day" was officially designated by proclamation last year by the Mayor of Mahwah, Bill Laforet, along with Councilman John Roth and then-Councilman John Spiech, to commemorate Kilmer's writing of "Trees" in his Mahwah house on February 2nd, 1913. Kilmer was killed in World War I, the most distinguished American to die in the war.
