Poet patriot Joyce Kilmer moved to Mahwah in 1912 "for the sake of the children," according to his son, Kenton -- and because it was less expensive than New York City for a growing family. Another reason was his love of the outdoors. Joyce Kilmer wrote his mother: "The mountains about here are very interesting...I climbed two of them...The valley between them is full of wild honeysuckle...I went fishing Sunday and caught a large, fat perch."
