DID YOU KNOW?
Poet patriot Joyce Kilmer and his youngest son, Christopher, both served during wartime in the famous "Fighting 69th" regiment - in different wars. Joyce enlisted in the mostly Irish-American unit shortly after the U.S. entered World War I in 1917. He was killed in action in France, the most distinguished American to die in that war. Christopher joined the regiment in 1941 and served in the Pacific in World War II. He returned home after his service. Joyce became an international celebrity after writing the enduring poem "Trees" in his Mahwah house on February 2, 1913.
