Joyce Kilmer Facts #18

DID YOU KNOW?

When a brushfire broke out in Mahwah in May, 1916, the hastily-assembled volunteer firefighters included poet patriot Joyce Kilmer. He had gained international fame with his poem "Trees," written in his house at the southwest corner of Airmount and Armour Roads on February 2, 1913. Still wearing his suit and tie, Kilmer joined his neighbors to beat out the smoky blaze with a broom. Afterward, the triumphant volunteers posed for a photograph with their brooms, shovels and water buckets.
