Poet patriot Joyce Kilmer became a national literary celebrity with the publication of his poem "Trees" in August, 1913, but he never let his fame diminish his interaction with his Mahwah neighbors. Kilmer wrote a special autographed copy of "Trees" (dated May 7, 1915) in the jacket of his book of poems for Mrs. Rose Brandenburg, who lived nearby his Airmount Road home, a similar copy for Mrs. Dorothy Hardy and also gave Mrs. E. T. Bennett a handwritten copy of "Trees."
