Mahwah Beats Westwood To Win Its Second Consecutive North 1, Group 2 Football Championship

The Thunderbirds beat Westwood 35-28 in a back-and-forth affair at MetLife Stadium Sunday.

MAHWAH, N.J. — The thunderbirds are soaring high again.

The Mahwah High School varsity football team won the North 1, Group 2 championship for the second consecutive year after a see-saw battle with Westwood that saw the thunderbirds win 35-28. It is Mahwah's fifth state championship in school history.

The game was tied at 28 when defensive end Jack Wood intercepted Sean Hopkins and ran it back 31 yards for a touchdown.

Hopkins connected with Sean McCay on a 47-yard score, but Mahwah quickly tied things up 7-7 with a touchdown by Brian DePaola. McCay put Westwood up 14-7 and Westwood was leading by the same margin at halftime, 21-14.

DePaola scored twice in the third quarter to put Mahwah up 28-21.

The score was tied at 28, until Hopkins intercepted Wood.
