Mahwah Bowlers Win First League Championship in 18 Years
The girls varsity team had a better season record than any other team in its league

It’s been nearly 20 years since Mahwah bowlers were named the best. A group of five Mahwah girls just broke the mold.
The High School’s Girls Varsity Bowling Team was recently crowned the champions of the Patriot Division in the Big North Conference.
The team finished the season with an impressive 49-7 record, the best of any team in its league. According to the team’s coach, Jim Dalessio, 2013 marks the first time the Mahwah Girls Bowling Team has nabbed the title since 1995.

“It’s awesome, I’m so proud of them,” Dalessio said. “They won because they all did it together. All the girls put in the effort, and it really paid off.”
According to its coach, the team – which is made up of all MHS sophomores and juniors – was first seen as a league competitor when it beat favorite Westwood during December. The team beat Westwood again in January, clinching its top record.

“Last year, this team put in the work. The girls built up their game,” Dalessio said. “This year, they really stepped it up.”
The girls also placed fourth in the Group Two State Sectional Tournament.
The members of the team are Captains Anna Zaat and Allison Homler, and Sapna Gera, Kristen Mihok, and Casey Hollm.
Dalessio called the season an “excellent year,” and said the team is already planning for bigger and better accomplishments next year.
