Veterans Day had its root in Armistice day, which celebrated the end of World War I on November 11, 1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month). In 1956, it was proclaimed Veterans Day so that it could honor all veterans. (Memorial Day, on the other hand, honors those who've passed away).
