Mahwah Police, Dairy Queen Team Up For Helmet Safety Campaign

Kids caught wearing their helmets will get a free ice cream cone.

MAHWAH, NJ — Police officers who catch kids wearing their safety helmets will get a sweet treat.

Officers will be issuing "tickets" for a free ice cream cone to kids they see wearing helmets while their riding their bicycle, skateboard, in-line skates or scooters, said Officer Rosario Zito, president of the Mahwah Police Benevolent Association Local 143.

Tickets can be redeemed at the Mahwah Dairy Queen at 117 Franklin Turnpike.

"The goal is not only to encourage kids to wear their helmets, but also create the opportunity for positive interactions between Mahwah officers and the youth of our town," Zito said.

State law requires that children 16 and younger must wear helmets when riding a bicycle or any of the vehicles previously mentioned, Zito reminded residents.

"Please join us in promoting safe habits and preventing serious injuries by encouraging your children and their friends to wear their helmets," Zito said.
