UPDATE: Mahwah Schools Closed Friday

The district will close schools on Friday, they determined. A decision will be made about high school athletics on Friday afternoon.

MAHWAH, NJ — Mahwah Public Schools will not open on Friday, canceling classes after originally planning for a delayed open.

A decision about Mahwah High School athletics will be made on Friday afternoon, officials said.

This comes after officials originally announced that the district would operate with a modified schedule, but could change course if need be.

"If we need to take further precautions, we will make another announcement by 6:00 a.m. If no change is indicated, please follow the delayed opening schedule for your school tomorrow morning," officials said.

Forecasters predict 3-5 in. of snowfall in North Jersey starting Thursday night and continuing into Friday morning. The snow predicted for Friday morning is likely to cause the most problems, NWS officials said.

"Treacherous roadway conditions are likely, especially early," the NWS said, signaling potential trouble for morning commuters.

Gov. Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency on Thursday, which goes into effect at 10 p.m.

Murphy recommended that anyone who can work remotely or start later in the day should do so. Forecasters expect the brunt of the storm to occur between 1-7 a.m. Friday, with the highest snowfall totals projected for portions of South and Central Jersey.
